Clock is Ticking for Registrants Added Back Under New Law

Under the new law I discussed here, individuals who thought they were finished registering in Indiana as a sex or violent offender were informed by letter from the D.O.C. that they were given a new registration obligation. The law provides those affected a process to request review of their cases and to consider additional information about their registration status.

But in late June, only days after many people learned they they were being forced to begin registering anew, the D.O.C. foreclosed the opportunity to request review. On June 24, 2026, the D.O.C. sent letters informing people that the agency had undertaken the review process without any input from those affected by the law, and had issued a “final agency decision” that those individuals must register.

A “final agency decision” triggers a 30-day deadline for registrants to seek judicial review. If you received a letter from the D.O.C. about offender registration matters and have questions, please send me an email at cara.wieneke@gmail.com
